Fever is a natural immune response, and most cases in children are mild and resolve within days. Some signs, however, require prompt attention.
What counts as a fever?
A temperature of 38°C or higher measured rectally or in the ear, or 37.5°C under the arm.
Home care
- Plenty of fluids and feeding.
- Light clothing and a moderately warm room.
- A fever reducer at the weight-appropriate dose after consulting a doctor.
- Never give aspirin to children.
Seek a doctor immediately if
- The child is under 3 months with a temperature of 38°C or more.
- The fever lasts more than 3 days.
- A rash appears that does not fade when pressed.
- The child is unusually drowsy or hard to wake.
- There is difficulty breathing or a seizure.
A pediatrician on Nefhm can assess the situation by video and tell you whether an emergency visit is needed.
